From When? Directly after Catherine invites her to the Cafe Diplomatico to confront Chloe on her lies about Catherine's husband.

History: Here's a wiki-link

Personality: Chloe is a sophisticated, reasonably well-educated young woman who happens to be a call-girl. She works in hotels and other high-class establishments. She dresses well, enjoys fashion and music, learned some Japanese in school and likes walking in Allen Gardens. She likes a particular band – Raised by Swans - a lot and goes to their live shows. She seems like a fairly normal girl.

Underneath this, Chloe has a lot of trouble connecting with people in a real, meaningful way. She knows how to act, how to be what people want her to be (most obviously in a sexual way) but she doesn't have a good concept of how real emotional connections work. She craves true affection, sympathy and caring -- her fixation on Catherine stems from Catherine seemingly not wanting anything from her -- but she doesn't understand how to get that without resorting to destructive actions. She is attention-seeking and uses a lot of manipulation to get this attention and caring from other people. Affection is tied up with sex in her view; to be wanted emotionally means you must be wanted sexually. She tends to fixate deeply on a single person at a time; someone who shows that they care without wanting something else at first, someone who she thinks can be manipulated into loving her, someone who is damaged in some way. In the film, we see Chloe become obsessed with Catherine, a gynaecologist she met by chance one night in a restaurant bathroom who was kind to her without wanting anything in return.

Chloe's an accomplished liar. She tells lies like they're the truth, adding little details and never telling the same story twice. As a part of her job, Chloe "puts on" different personas. She's never completely herself, and is always aware of what people might want her to be. Both for her job and in her personal life she uses careful lies that aren't over the top and she is expert at reeling her target in and out by developing the details of her story. She doesn't see anything wrong with this; in getting what she wants or needs, lying is a perfectly acceptable way to get it. When lying to someone, she will embellish their stories, try to figure out what they want to hear or what will cause them to act in the way she wants them to. Everything about the “encounters” Chloe tells Catherine she had with Catherine's husband is a fabrication. She lies about the whole thing, telling Catherine that he flirted with her one day, she jerked him off in the park the next time they met, the next time they had sex in a hotel room. She progresses the story effortlessly, never thinking why it might be wrong, only thinking about keeping Catherine close to her. When Catherine looks like she is about to back out of their agreement, Chloe instantly scrambles for a detail about the meeting with Catherine's husband that will draw her in and keep her there. She pushes her, deliberately trying to upset her, pinpointing Catherine's fears and insecurities so she can manipulate her way into her emotions and make Catherine reliant on her.

Getting taken care of in a non-sexual way is intoxicating for her, indicating that she probably was neglected as a kid, and was never looked after as much as she needed, and because of this, she isn't afraid to hurt herself or others in her pursuit of a single person. She also has a petty obsessive streak. When Catherine ignores her and tries to break off their arrangement after they have sex, Chloe calls her office seven or eight times and, resorting to more obvious blackmail, emails through a photo she took of Catherine and herself naked in bed. When Catherine tries to end the business with Chloe, Chloe is deeply upset and hurt. She is completely delusional about how Catherine truly feels about her. She even resorts to violence, stabbing herself with a hairpin and accidentally drawing blood, then holding it against Catherine's neck and asking for a kiss. Safe to say, she doesn't deal with rejection well, and though not usually violent, won't avoid it if she's in high-stress emotional situations.

Chloe knows how to be sexual, how to be alluring; her clothing, hair and makeup is always perfect, and she is well aware of how she looks to others. As a call-girl, Chloe views sex as a means to an end; in her job, her body is an object. She becomes whatever the client wants her to be, and her own pleasure is irrelevant. That doesn't mean that she doesn't enjoy sex, but when in a job context she almost dissociates from it. It doesn't mean anything. She does say that she "tries to find something to love in everybody" and it seems like it's true. She makes her job bearable by focusing on little things about her clients that she likes. When she has sex with someone she cares about (someone who has more than just a little thing to love, in her view) it's a different story – it has more meaning than it should. When Chloe sleeps with Catherine she's focused on giving the other woman pleasure but it means so much more than it does with any of her usual clients because it feels like an emotional connection. She also understands that sex can be a weapon, something that can hurt. After Catherine rejects her, she starts making a plan to sleep with Michael (Catherine's teenage son), both as a form of revenge and as a way of making Catherine jealous, and also just for the chance to get closer to her again.

Why do you think your character would work in this setting? Why did your character accept Eli's offer? How will they respond to the setting? What will they do here to earn a living?

Chloe is a determined woman. It manifests in awful ways in her canon but that determination, if she directs it to something productive (say like developing a new life in a frontier space town) will serve her well. The way she reinvents herself constantly to adapt to relationships will be helpful to her in New Dodge. Also, she has a service to provide.

Chloe was in an extremely emotionally vulnerable state when Eli came to her, having just had Catherine expose her lies about her sexual meetings with Catherine's husband. Accepting his offer was impulsive and basically a snap decision (probably some part of her knew that the idea she had for going to meet and sleep with Catherine's son would inevitably end in a bad way). The idea of a new life - or at least, getting away from her present one for a time - was appealing enough in that instant for her to make that choice. If it doesn't work out, she can always come back: time away will make Catherine appreciate her. :V

She will probably be at least a bit overwhelmed by the setting to start, although her reaction to that will likely be to try harder than ever to appear as calm and collected as always. She's going to be in full-on chameleon mode, trying to read what people want her to be and striving to be it. It's easier to get by that way. The whole frontier-town lifestyle will be a shock to her system too, and adjusting to the limited goods and services and everything available will take her a bit of time. Her skillset is pretty basic, and though she might attempt work at a "normal" job for a while (perhaps in the saloon or the bathhouse?) she will in all likelihood continue to perform sex work and set up escort services once she becomes accustomed to New Dodge.

Inventory: A suitcase stuffed full with a whole bunch of clothes (Practical, impractical, gorgeous coats and lingerie etc etc. Girl needs to look good.), a few pairs of shoes and boots, various different make-ups, two smallish bottles of perfume, some jewellery and hairpins (mostly silver and not too big or fancy). She also has a bunch of toiletries like a toothbrush/toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, a hairbrush, hairspray etc. She also has a small netbook in a sleeve.

A handbag containing the following:
A selection of condoms and lube. (She has an implant contraceptive; the condoms are mainly for STI prevention.)
A small travel CD player, with a half-full CD case.
A pretty basic travel first-aid kit.
A mobile phone.
A couple of books.

Is it possible for her to bring her bicycle too? I'm cool if she can't.

Third-Person Sample: After the long and crowded shuttle ride to New Dodge and the seemingly interminable wait at the somehow even more cramped airlock was over and she had been guided through the Customs and Processing facility, Chloe was glad to finally have a moment to breathe. Her clothes were wrinkled and, frankly, she needed a shower. There had been no peace on the shuttle. Everything was strange here. Everything was new. Eyes closed, she took a deep breath and let it out slowly. She resettled her bag over her shoulder, tucking the ration card and her room key safely away as she did so. The TC, boots and clothing they'd given her went into the suitcase, looking drab and unremarkable on top of her own carefully chosen outfits. She looked at them for a moment. They'd be good for blending in, when she didn't want anyone to take much notice. Her hair in a rough ponytail, no makeup... She'd barely warrant a second glance.

Taking a moment to make sure she had noted the directions to where she'd be staying, Chloe paused to get a better, calmer look at her home away from home. The new, hastily constructed New Dodge. There was work to be done here. It was a unique opportunity, a chance to step away from everything at home. Six months here, Eli had told her, at least. It would be like she just disappeared; it would add to her mystique. Catherine would expect to hear from her, maybe she'd even try to call; there would be no answer. What would she feel, every time the phone rang out, Chloe's recorded voice saying the same message over and over, asking her to leave a name and number? What would the expression on her face be like? Would she wonder? No matter what Catherine had said, they'd shared something; Chloe had felt something. A smile, bitter and small, pulled her lips as those thoughts passed over her. Catherine was worlds away, for now.
